Nizam's jewellery exhibition opens today in Hyderabad

One of the finest collections in the world is on display for public viewing at the in Salarjung Museum in Hyderabad.

With the inaugration of an exhibition of Nizam's jewellery, one of the finest collections in the world is on display from today for public viewing at the in Salarjung Museum in Hyderabad. The jewellery is valued at rupees 218 Crore.

The exhibited work is the richest and the largest collection of jewellery purchased by the Government of India in 1995. The diamonds from the celebrated mines of Golconda and the Columbian emeralds dominate the unique collection.

According to the Director of the museum, A.K.V.S Reddy elaborate security arrangements have been made for the safety of the 173 precious pieces, which include rings, necklaces, belts, bangles, buttons and cufflinks.

Most of the jewellery is uncut. There are diamonds and emeralds which include the Jacob diamond, Columbian emeralds, belts and Alexander rings. The uniqueness of these is that they were worn on ceremonial occasion," says A.K.V.S Reddy.

The exhibition was inaugurated on Saturday (Dec.31) by Sushil Kumar Shinde, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

Mir Osman Ali Khan was the last Nizam of Hyderabad.
