Manish Malhotra maybe synonymous with Bollywood style, but he had no filmy plans for the first edition of Delhi’s own couture week. The event, which kickstarted in the Capital yesterday with Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s show, followed by Malhotra’s, didn’t see any lovely ladies from B-town walking for the latter, even though many are his fans.
Why, we wondered. “When I get Bollywood, I’m told that the stars take away all the attention. I get slotted as a ‘Bollywood’ designer. And now, when I’m not getting any Bollywood, I’m asked ‘why not?’ This is unfair! At times, I feel targeted because I do a lot of Bollywood, and seldom talk about my sales or engage in public relation activities. This doesn’t mean I don’t do other things. I put in a lot of extra hours,” he says.
In town a day before the event, he discussed everything, from hair and makeup to sets, and made sure everything was in place. But there was a time when he wasn’t even on the list of participants. "I believe it slipped out of their mind, but I don’t want to know why and how," he says.
His client base in Delhi has expanded over the last year, and the Capital will see much more of him now, he assures. His collection, he says, was a representation of his brand and he doesn’t want to change it. “Why should I do something else? This is my brand and feminism is what it stands for. If I do something else, then I will become a wannabe and I’m not a wannabe. My clothes are all about opulence, but, not bridal, not embroidered and not Swarovski. At the same time, they’re wearable, as shock value is out-of-fashion.” Manish flew down the best male models from Mumbai, as he “wanted the best”.
