Forget the predictable tuxedo. The dapper men in Delhi who ‘dread looking like everyone’s clone’ are wearing Pathani suits to weddings this season! Wondering what has made this salwar-collared kurta combo a hit? Well, it’s Bollywood that’s offering all the inspiration. Shah Rukh Khan is turning the swag on in a black Pathani suit in the poster of his upcoming film.

Actors Abhishek Bachchan and Salman Khan also recently rocked the attire, encouraging men to get Pathani suits stitched. Lakhbir Singh, a city-based cinematographer says, “Why look like everyone else? I am going for a navy blue Pathani suit in silk for my cousin’s wedding.” And Lakhbir is not the only one. Anandita Khera, a city-based designer says, “From would-be grooms to their friends, everyone’s ordering Pathani suits. Clearly, it’s inspired by the films. Paired with aviators and jutis, the attire makes for a cool Indo-western look.”

Fashion gurus suggests giving the outfit a modern spin. “Tweaks such as half sleeves instead of full, and wearing unconventional colours can make the look work,” says designer Raghavendra Rathore. Sunil Sethi, president FDCI agrees. “A Pathani suit demands elegance. Superior feel fabrics work well for it. Team your suit with a jacket for a ceremonial feel,” he suggests. However, keep your body type in mind. “It’s a tricky look for short and lean men,” warns designer Nikhil Mehra.
