Door-to-door collection of property tax, other utility fee in Gurgaon starts today

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has tied up with ICICI Bank for the initiative; bank representatives will collect tax payment, in cash or cheque, from residents’ homes. Bank may charge a small fee for the service

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) will start the door-to-door collection for property tax, water charges and other utilities on Monday.

The development is another addition to the MCG’s list of convenient modes of paying taxes and other utility charges. The initiative has been taken to encourage residents to pay their taxes and increasing MCG’s tax collection.

MCG officials said they will tie up with ICICI Bank for the door-to-door collection process.

Under the scheme, residents need to make an appointment for tax payment with the MCG or bank officials directly and reserve a time slot for submitting their property tax.

A representative from the bank will then arrive at the property tax payer’s residence and collect the sum and may charge a nominal fee for the service.

The tax can be paid in cash or through a cheque. The taxpayer will then get an acknowledgement receipt for the payment either by SMS or email.

“The MCG has been working on various options to introduce easy modes of payment for property tax and, in addition, link services such as payment of water charges and payments for other utilities with the same mode of payment. The service will help residents avoid long queues at the MCG office,” said SS Rohilla, public relation officer of the municipal corporation.

Last year, the MCG introduced online assessment and payment of property tax on its official website in a tie-up with HDFC bank. This year, the MCG has partnered with two e-commerce firms—Paytm and MobiKwik— to facilitate payment of property tax. They have also tied up with Axis Bank for payments at their branches.

This year, the MCG collected over ₹500 crore in property tax against last year’s ₹382 crore. The collection was boosted by MCG’s rebate schemes that lasted for nearly six months.

The scheme also gave a cash sum incentive to RWAs where over 80% property tax collection was done.

“The MCG’s door-to-door scheme will be hugely beneficial to senior residents who find it difficult to make payments online or by visiting the MCG offices,” Civil Lines resident Vinit Rohilla said.
