Leader of opposition in the Haryana assembly Abhay Chautala on Tuesday accused the Manohar Lal Khattar led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of causing water and power crises in Gurgaon and across the state.

Briefing the media in Gurgaon on Tuesday, the senior Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader said the government has failed to deliver on its promises in the past three years.

Chautala said, “The Haryana government purchases electricity at 44 paisa per unit and sells it to end users at Rs 8 to 9 per unit. Yet, the electricity supply is pathetic. The city (Gurgaon) reels under shortage and voltage fluctuations all the time. There is corruption in the (power) department. In spite of filtering out corrupt officials, the government and officials are harassing innocent consumers.”

The state assembly election is two years away and it is speculated that the INLD leader has set the ball rolling to gain power in the state.

In the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) elections in September 2017, the INLD managed to get just one of 35 seats.

In the state assembly elections 2014, the INLD won 19 of 90 seats in Haryana, four ahead of Congress.

“Gurgaon generates maximum revenue but residents here are crying foul round the year for uninterrupted water and electricity supply. The CM announced twice that Gurgaon will get 24x7 electricity supply. But this is a blatant lie. Similarly, the government has failed to provide adequate water to the city. We will reveal all scams this government is part of in the time to come,” the leader of opposition said.

This is Chautala’s first media briefing after the party’s defeat in the MCG election.

Chautala accused the government of spending Rs 1,700 crore on advertisement in the run-up to the Swarn Jayanti celebrations and called the entire programme “a big scam”.

Replying to Chautala’s allegations, PWD minister and Badshahpur MLA Rao Narbir Singh said, “The INLD ruined the state during its tenure and now they are desperate after a humiliating defeat in the MCG elections.”
