Gurgaon drivers beware: Flout traffic rules and be ready to encounter Yamraj

Sandeep Singh, a Gurgaon cop, dons the role of Yamraj, to be part of the anti-drink driving campaign organised by Gurgaon Traffic Police in association with Road Safety Officers.

What will be your reaction if you suddenly see Yamraj, the Lord of Death in Hindu mythology, on the streets of Gurgaon managing traffic and even punishing those violating rules? “All my misdeeds will appear in front of my eyes and I’ll think twice about breaking traffic rules,” responds Mridul Sharma, a resident of Millennium City.

Not only Mridul, but many more went under the scanner, when Sandeep Singh from Gurgaon Traffic Police, dressed as Yamraj, regulated traffic as a part of an anti-drink driving campaign. Otherwise dressed in the usual uniform, Singh takes to the streets at night wearing a garland of lighted skulls around his neck and sword in his hand for the drive conducted by Gurgaon Traffic Police with support of Road Safety Officers.

“My job is to motivate people to stay away from driving when drunk. I warn them that if they don’t listen, they receive my wrath. Such drives are to make people aware in a dramatic way. If I explain to someone in that attire, at least 20 people take notice. I work for the police department and will play any role to spread the message,” says the cop, who has been subjected to abuses as well as apologies during this drive. Statements such as ‘Tu Hai Kaun’, ‘Aaaram se khada ho ja’, were met by him during such drives. Singh, who joined the Gurgoan’s police department four years back, has been with the police force for about nine years.

“Ek raat mein maine kam se kam 20-25 bando ko samjhaaya ki drink karke drive nahi karni chahiye. Drink and drive se banda khud toh apni life kharab karta hi hai; uski family ko baad mein bughatna padta hai. Woh khud ki life ke saath kitni jano ki life kharab kar raha hai (I spoke to at least 20-25 commuters, emphasising on why they shouldn’t drink and drive. The person who drinks and drives not only endangers his life, but also the life of others),” says Singh who is gearing up for another drive in the city.
