Gurgaon: MCG to step up crackdown on construction waste, garbage burning in open

The MCG said it issued three fines for illegal construction waste dumping in the city on Saturday

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is set to intensify its crackdown on open waste burning and illegal construction and demolition (C&D) waste, officials said.

The development comes in the light of high pollution levels in the city, which is expected to deteriorate further in the coming months due to stubble burning in North India.

According to MCG officials, on Saturday, three fines for illegal C&D waste dumping were issued near IFFCO Chowk Metro station and Kanhai village.

The three fines, of ₹5,000 each, were issued to contractors. The fines will increase by 20% in the event of another violation.

“Teams have been formulated for ‘checking and fining’ violations on C&D waste dumping and open waste burning. The MCG is adhering to directions of the Supreme Court on tackling air pollution across NCR during winter and is adopting necessary measures,” SS Rohilla, public relations officer, MCG, said.

Earlier this month, after a meeting attended by representatives of MCG, Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) on measures for pollution control during winter, MCG Commissioner V Umashakar issued a list of directions.

As per MCG officials, they have notified all RWAs on the matter and will start issuing fines of ₹5,000 to the RWA that fails to comply with the directive from next month.

MCG officials added that the nodal committee, comprising MCG officials and regional officers of the HSPCB to monitor pollution measures in the city, is also expected to start operations next month.
