Truck drivers park at Delhi borders to protest diesel vehicle ban

To protest against the governments of Delhi, Haryana and UP for not issuing fitness certificates to diesel vehicles more than 10 years old, truck and bus operators from across north India on Tuesday parked their vehicles at Delhi borders in the national capital Region (NCR).

The All India Motor Transport Congress, which is spearheading the protest, wants that either the government should amend the order or give compensation to over one lakh affected vehicle owners. Around 1,200 vehicles in Gurgaon have been hit.

The refusal to issue fitness certificate to vehicles in Delhi and NCR came after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned old diesel vehicles in May.

Bhim Wadhwa, president of the All India Motor Transport Congress, said that there are over one lakh vehicles in Delhi-NCR that would be affected by this decision.

“We are asking the government to issue certificates while the hearing in this case is taking place at the NGT,” said Wadhwa.

“This is not a strike but protest. We will park vehicles on Delhi border across the NCR to press for our demands. The government needs to help us otherwise we will be forced to keep our vehicles standing there,,” said Ashok Dhingra, another functionary of All India Motor Transport Congress.
