Here's some good news for those looking for a easier way to shed flab - scientists claim to have invented a laser which destroys fat cells instantly, without having to exercise or diet.

The Zerona treatment, which is painless, costs 1,000 pounds for six 40-minute sessions during which a laser passes over the skin and ruptures fat cells, which are expelled from the body, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The procedure has reportedly been used by Hollywood celebrities to quickly slim for events as no recovery time is needed and there are no scars. Tatiana Karelina, who runs the Laser Lounge in Kensington, West London, said: "It's the invention every woman has been waiting for."

US safety regulator the FDA found the average patient lost 3.64 inches from the waist, hips, and thighs. Some lost 9 ins. But the laser doesn't work on obese people – as it can't cut through the layers of fat.

Trials of the technique are thought to have proven that fat grafts can last longer and provide a better appearance than implants. The procedure was recently discussed by top surgeons from around the world at the annual meeting of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
