Come winter and Delhiites head to restaurants with outdoor seating arrangements to enjoy the lavish brunch buffets. This year, however, the dark blanket of smog is affecting the business of several restaurants which offer outdoor brunch buffets in the Capital. Due to smog brunches are now shifting indoors, much to the dismay of restaurant owners. “People want to sit inside because of smog. It is affecting our business badly due to space crunch,” says Jasneet Sahni, who owns Lanterns Kitchen & Bar in Rajendra Place.
“Pre-Diwali, it was a mosquito menace which made us shift the brunch arrangements inside. And now it’s the smog, we have seen a decline in the footfall and so have decided to set-up brunch inside the restaurant this year.”
A similar concern is shared by Ankit Achtani. He owns the Drunk House in Rajouri Garden – which has overtime become a popular hub for foodies in West Delhi. Achtani says, “Most of the queries we are getting nowadays are pertaining to whether we serve weekend brunch indoors or not. It’s not possible to accommodate a lot of people indoors, especially when it comes to handling the weekend brunch. We have therefore postponed our weekend brunch for two weeks, and hope that the smog reduces by then.”
Even chefs of restaurants in NCR are receiving repeated requests for indoor seating for brunch, and are facing a tough time catering to large crowds and setting up dishes in covered areas due to smog. Vineet Manocha, corporate executive chef, Lite Bite Foods says, “We have recently opened Punjab Grill Tappa in Cyberhub, Gurgaon and we were looking forward to host people for outdoor brunch but post-Diwali people have been requesting us to get them a seat inside rather. In the last 5-7 days, the visitors have been making a beeline for indoor seats. And it’s not easy to accommodate every request.” He adds, “It also gets difficult to display and serve a lavish spread indoors as opposed to outdoors.”
