Warner Bros made the most of Marvel’s absence from this year’s San Diego Comic Con and unleashed four new trailers for their biggest upcoming releases. The one that has proven to be a dark horse is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The film serves as a sequel to the 2014 reboot, which itself was the first in a planned shared universe that continued with Kong: Skull Island.
King of the Monsters continues down the same road that angered several fans the first time around: Not enough monsters. The first Godzilla took its own time to reveal the titular lizard, who according to some fans has screen time equivalent to that of Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs - about 10-15 mins. This new trailer also focuses more on the humans than on the monsters, which it chooses to show only silhouettes of.

{{/usCountry}}It seems as if she signs off on the destruction of a significant portion of the planet in order to save the rest from a battle for the throne that is taking place between the monsters.
There are nods to the secretive Monarch organisation, that was mentioned in both Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island. And like those films, this one too seems to suggest that the ultimate monster is humanity.
The trailer retains the self-serious tone of the first film, offering glimpses of iconic characters such as Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed King Ghidorah. But it ends with a blood-curdling growl by Godzilla, whose arrival Charles Dance announces in the trailer by saying, “Long live the king.”
King of the Monsters is directed by Michael Dougherty and will be released in May, 2019.
