Known for his eccentric, nomadic style, Hollywood actor Johnny Depp wants to live with Indian Banjaras. “I’m very curious to know more about the nomadic tribes of India called the Banjara. I would love to explore life with these gypsies,” says the 48-year-old. And why is that? “Of what I have heard and read, these guys really know the definition of living,” says the actor, whose love for India doesn’t end here.
He was supposed to rub shoulders with Amitabh Bachchan in the Indian star’s Hollywood debut Shantaram, but the project was stalled. However, Big B finally managed his first international outing with Baz Luhrrman’s The Great Gatsby last year, and Depp’s happy. “Mr Bachchan is a very strong and important actor. He is also a very interesting man and I have great respect for him. I am glad that Hollywood has got him finally,” says the actor-musician.
Depp adds that he also seeks inspiration from the musical aspect in Indian films.” Music is such an integral part of Indian cinema. For me, music is my passion and acting is my profession and if I could blend the both to make a single product (like it is done in Bollywood), I will be a content person,” says the actor, who is winning praise for his vampire outing, Dark Shadows, which hit Indian screens on Friday.
This is Depp’s eighth film with his friend Tim Burton and working with the filmmaker is not easy for the actor. “In every film that I’ve been lucky enough to do with Tim, there’s always some form of torture. Like the nails in this film (Depp had to wear fake nails) were Tim’s idea. They were the length of the fingers,” says Depp, adding, “But I had a troupe of people to help me go to the bathroom.”
