So we’ve just seen the ‘first’ trailer for Suicide Squad and can’t wait to talk about it. We suspect it may be too early to tell, but the last time a trailer blew us away like this there were a bunch of shiny and chrome vehicles blowing up real good in the Wasteland. And just the thought of another movie even fractionally coming close to Mad Max: Fury Road is enough to hype us into a frenzy.
What we know of the story is pretty much the same as last time. Viola Davis wants to “assemble a task force of the most dangerous people on the planet.” And while it may not be immediately clear what their ‘task’ is, our money is on an infiltration of Arkham Asylum, the home for Gotham’s criminally insane. And that is probably where the Joker enters the picture. Heck, maybe their operation is to break him out. Wouldn’t that be cool?

How could a movie about a ragtag bunch of misfit supervillains eclipse the excitement of Batman v Superman? And guess what: This time they don’t even milk Jared Leto’s Joker. He’s in it less than Captain Boomerang, no joke. And not like they’re teasing him out slowly. It’s just the way it is and that’s incredible. Just one slight observation: Leto’s Joker voice is beginning to sound an awful lot like Heath Ledger’s.

That Comic Con trailer was darker, more sombre with its visuals and tone while this one makes Guardians of the Galaxy look like Schindler’s List. What’s most surprising is how proudly Harley Quinn is featured. It’s almost like they know she’s going to be a scene-stealer. And unlike most trailers, her jokes here actually land. And now that they’ve had the time to fine-tune some of the visual effects, the whole movie has taken on a spectacular new scale.
If you thought that creepy version of I Started a Joke in the previous trailer was an inspired choice then you ain’t seen nothing yet. Whoever came up with the idea of using Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody here, and more pertinently, the guy who edited this whole thing to perfection, both deserve some kind of award. Or maybe just a lot of money. You’ll see what we’re talking about.

Harley sums it up perfectly when straight guy leader of the team Rick Flag gives her an incredulous look when she steals a purse in the middle of what appears to be a major action scene. “We’re bad guys. It’s what we do.” She may as well have added a ‘duh’ to accompany that epic eye roll.
Director David Ayer’s bubblegum psychotic acid trip of a superhero movie is due out in August. It stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis.
