Becoming a mother at 55 may be unusual but the in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) technique gave Veena Tewari of Chass a son after four decades of marriage.
Married in 1976 to Vikash Tiwari, Veena became the first person in Dhanbad to get a child via IVF. Her son was born on May 25.
“It’s just like a dream come true,” the couple told reporters after being treated at an infertility treatment clinic under Dr Neha Jha, an in-vitro fertilisation specialist.
Earlier, said Dr Jha, embryos used to be developed in test tubes — leading to the name test tube babies — but now they are developed in petri dishes.
“Since the word test tube has become popular, here also we use the same language to make people aware of the treatment,” she said.
The couple approached Jha about a year ago after decades of praying and consulting doctors.
“It’s a blessing of the Almighty,” said Vikash.
Jha said she was initially apprehensive about success in the case because of Veena’s age as she was in menopause for the past 15 years.
