The boy, Sumit Munna Jaiswal, who lived nearby, was pulled out by local residents and officers from the Dharavi police, who were alerted.

Jaiswal was admitted to Sion hospital, where he died during treatment.

“The boy reportedly went to fish for crabs at the nullah, when he slipped and fell. Locals took him to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately he could not be saved. The incident took place at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar nullah, which connects to Mithi river. The boy fell at the point where the nullah flows into the Mithi river,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant commissioner, G-North ward.

Suresh Patil, senior police inspector, Dharavi, said a case of accidental death has been registered.

“Around 3pm, Jaiswal, along with his younger brother, went to catch crabs near the creek near his house. But he lost his balance and fell into the creek. He was unconscious when he was rescued by locals,” said a police officer. Jaiswal was declared dead at 3.30pm by hospital authorities.

Jaiswal is survived by his father, Munna Jaiswal, who is a driver, his mother and three brothers — Anand, 12, Amit, 6, and Mahesh, 3.

Anand said many children usually go to catch crabs at the spot, after school.

This is the third such death in the city in a week. Divyansh, an 18-month old boy, fell into an open gutter in suburban Goregaon on Wednesday night. On Saturday, a 12-year-old boy died after falling into a water-filled pit, dug for the construction of the Coastal Road, near Worli. The boy, Bablu Kumar Paswan, had fallen in the pit near the Worli Sea Link on Friday, police said.
