The National Commission for Women (NCW) wants those accused of raping and murdering a 21-year-old woman in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on May 10 to be tried in a fast-track court.
NCW member Sushma Sahu, in Guwahati to hear some cases registered with the commission, said she would write to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and director-general of police Mukesh Sahay for prompt action.
“I have told the officials to ensure that those who are still on the run (in the Karbi Anglong case) be arrested at the earliest. Nobody should be spared. The commission wants them to be tried in a fast track court,” she said.
The Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) had earlier registered a case in connection with the Karbi Anglong incident. “We received a report from the police, updating us about the action taken and the progress in their investigation,” ASCW chairperson Chikimiki Talukdar said.
The police have so far arrested six persons in the Karbi Anglong case while two others are absconding. The eight, including a juvenile, had allegedly gang-raped the victim, killed her and hung the body from a tree to make it look like a suicide case.
The victim and the accused were residents of two neighbouring villages.

{{/usCountry}}The incident happened at Baithalangso when the victim, her male friend and another couple were returning home from a late night Bihu programme. The accused assaulted and drove the others away before pouncing on the woman.
The incident had triggered outrage with members of women organisations staging a series of protests.
