“We are hoping for a full recovery in the next few days,” said Dr Randeep Guleria, AIIMS director, who heads a team of five doctors attending to Vajpayee.

The former prime minister was diagnosed with urinary tract infection and chest congestion after he was rushed to AIIMS for a medical evaluation on Monday. Doctors monitoring his health condition detected low urine output, which is indicative of impaired kidney functions. Vajpayee was then put on a regimen of injectible antibiotics and made to undergo slow dialysis, a procedure where the blood of a patient with acute kidney injury is artificially purified of toxins in order to give the organ a chance to recuperate.

“He (Vajpayee) has shown significant improvement and his kidney functions have improved with good urine output. His vital parameters – blood pressure, heart rate and breathing – are also normal,” a hospital release stated.

The hospital had reported on Tuesday that the former prime minister was responding well to treatment.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath – who dropped by the hospital on Wednesday afternoon – became the latest high-profile politician to visit the ailing Vajpayee.

Former prime ministers Manmohan Singh and HD Deve Gowda; senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi; Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat; Union minister for food processing industries Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti; minister of state for health Ashwini Kumar Choubey; BJP MP Kalraj Mishra; and former parliamentarian Ashwani Kumar had visited Vajpayee at AIIMS on Tuesday.
