With Bhagwant Mann by his side, Arvind Kejriwal on Monday sharply criticised the central government’s latest Goods and Services Tax move, saying: “This is what the British used to do.”

“People are so fed up with inflation. Everything is getting expensive. A few days back, the centre imposed GST on curd. Lassi, Chaach and other food items have GST. Rice and wheat have GST too. This is what British used to do. Even amid inflation, taxes are being imposed.”

He further went on to count the achievements of the AAP government in Delhi. “We are trying to ease the burden of common people. The government schools have been improved now. So much so… that people don’t need to send their kids to private schools. If a family has two-three children, about 12-15 thousand can be saved,” Kejriwal said, adding that healthcare is affordable in the city and people are getting free electricity and water.

Arvind Kejriwal's comments assume significance at a time when the Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP have been sparring over various issues, including Delhi's new liqour policy. On Sunday, the AAP alleged that the Delhi Police had "forcibly" put up Prime Minister Narendra Modi's photos at an event that Kejriwal had to attend.

Earlier, the Delhi chief minister's Singapore visit - which was not given clearance had become a point of contention.
