The Centre on Friday notified 40 questions that respondents will be asked during the second phase of the Census, the population enumeration phase, with caste and the place of Covid vaccination among them. The exercise is set to begin from September 1 in snow-bound areas, according to a government order.
The population enumeration in Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be conducted from September 1 to 30, according to a gazette notification issued earlier this month.
In the rest of the country, the population enumeration (PE) will begin next year. This will be the first time caste details will be collected as part of the Census.

Phase 1 of Census 2027
The first phase, house listing and housing census (HLO), is underway and will continue till September 30.
Field visits for the house listing and housing census began on April 16 in several states and union territories.
During the housing listing exercise, enumerators visit each house and building to ask respondents 33 questions. These cover basic household facilities, details about the head of the household, including their name and sex, and the property's ownership status.
