Faculity at IITs, NITs may get a a pay hike as Centre to review their salaries

The human resource development has reportedly asked institutes “to put in place a process for discontinuation of non-performers”.

The faculty at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and other centrally funded institutes will get a pay hike after the Centre’s decision to review their salaries by taking into account recommendations of the Seventh Central Pay Commission.

A senior human resource development (HRD) ministry official said that the salary structure is likely to see an increase of over 16%-20% and faculty members woul see an increase of between Rs 20,000 and Rs 40,000 per month, depending on their position and scale.

“The pay of the directors of IITs/IIMs/IISc (Indian Institute of Science)/IISERs (Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research)/NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering), whose pay scale in the Sixth CPC was Rs 80,000 (fixed), shall only be fixed at level 17 i.e. Rs 2,25,000 and pay in respect of all other directors who were in the existing pay scales of Rs 75,000 + Rs 5,000 (special allowance) shall be fixed at Rs 2,10,000 (fixed),” states the circular issued by the ministry.

“Some of the faculty members in these institutes are hired on contractual basis for three years and their performance will be assessed. Naturally, those who don’t perform will be asked to mend their ways or leave,” said a source.

The hike will be retrospective which means the revised pay and rates of dearness allowance will be applied for from January 1, 2016. The last pay hike for teachers was implemented in 2006.
