Five members of a Haridwar-based family, including a three-year-old child, were killed after their vehicle plunged into a deep gorge on the Devprayag–Pauri state highway in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district on Friday, police said.
Police identified the deceased as Afzal, Shabbo (40), Annaviya (3), Shadhab (14) and Gufran (34), all residents of Laksar in Haridwar district.
Afzal, a 49-year-old contractor, was travelling to Pauri with his family in a Bolero jeep when the accident took place near the Kundadhar–Sabdarkhal area.
“The vehicle was being driven by Afzal Sufi. The vehicle plunged nearly 250 metres down the slope. Out of the six occupants, five died, while Arman was rescued and shifted to the Base Hospital in Srinagar for treatment,” senior superintendent of police Sarvesh Panwar said.
According to police officers, villagers alerted the Sabdarkhal police post and the control room of the Devprayag police station, following which police teams and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) launched a rescue operation.
Police and SDRF personnel continued the rescue and recovery operation at the accident site till late afternoon.
