Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was given a one-year extension on Wednesday, till July 14 next year on Wednesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet said in a statement.

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), Foreign Secretary, for a period of one year beyond 14.07.2026, i.e., up to 14.07.2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in terms of the provisions of F.R. 56(d),” the government statement said.
The extension was granted till July 14, 2027, under the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d). The foreign secretary is widely regarded as an expert on China and was appointed to the post in June 2024.
A copy of the order has been marked to the Cabinet Secretary, the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, the Secretaries to the President and Vice President of India, the Secretaries General of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, the Home Minister's Office, among other senior government officials.

{{/usCountry}}Misri is a 1989-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer who was serving as the Deputy National Security Adviser (NSA) before taking over as Foreign Secretary.
He is among the few diplomats to have served as private secretary to three prime ministers - Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh and Narendra Modi.
Before his stint as Deputy NSA, Misri served as India's ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021, a period marked by heightened tensions following the Galwan Valley clashes in June 2020.
He is believed to have played a key role in diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Beijing during the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control.

India's ambassador to Spain, Myanmar
Misri has also served as India's ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018).
During his diplomatic career, he has held postings in several Indian missions abroad, including Pakistan, the United States, Germany, Belgium and Sri Lanka.
During his diplomatic career, Misri has been posted in Brussels, Tunis, Islamabad and Washington, DC. He has also served as Deputy High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and Consul General in Munich.
