Many political leaders and legislators of AAP and Congress were detained several times on Wednesday in New Delhi while they were going to meet the family of a retired soldier who allegedly committed suicide over unfilled expectations regarding his pension.

Chaotic scenes broke out outside the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital as police stopped top opposition politicians from meeting the family of the deceased Subedar Ram Kishan Grewal, who friends said had unsuccessfully tried to meet defence minister Manohar Parrikar before killing himself.

Rahul Gandhi was detained outside Delhi’s RML Hospital, where the 70-year-old Grewal died after allegedly consuming poison.

“You pat yourself over the soldiers’ bravery and arrest us when we go to meet the family of a soldier who committed suicide. Patriotism?” Sisodia tweeted later.

Gandhi’s detention came within minutes of a similar action against deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and his party MLA Surinder Singh. They were detained while speaking to Grewal’s family.
