To increase bilateral co-operation along the coastal border, Bangladesh Coast Guard’s (BCG) chief on Saturday discussed security issues with Indian Coast Guard officials in Kolkata.
A Bangladeshi delegation led by rear admiral Aurangzeb Chowdhury, director general of Bangladesh Coast Guard, met Indian Coast Guard’s north-east commander Inspector General K R Nautiyal.
Matters regarding maritime safety and security of the Bay of Bengal were discussed in particular, officials said, adding that the delegation was given a brief on the operational role and responsibilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
During the meet, Nautiyal brought out that standard operating procedures for the establishment of collaborative relationship and development of regional cooperation was likely to be signed during the forthcoming high-level meeting between the two nations.
Both the Coast Guards have been closely cooperating on a host of common issues since many years.
During the visit of Indian Prime Minister to Bangladesh a MoU was signed between ICG and BCG in 2015 for establishment of a collaborative relationship to combat transnational illegal activities at sea and development of regional cooperation between the two Coast Guards.
As a part of capacity building, ICG has been imparting specialist training for BCG personnel on maritime subjects like maritime law, search and rescue, pollution response, boarding operation, helicopter operations and anti-piracy, at their training centre in Kochi since February 2014.
