A head constable was killed when unidentified militants fired indiscriminately at a joint check-post of the Jammu & Kashmir police and Central Reserve Police Force at Yaripora in Kulgam district on Saturday amid a spike in violence over the last several weeks in the Union Territory.
In a statement, the police identified the head constable as Mohammad Amin Bagat. It added he sustained grievous gunshot injuries and later succumbed to his injuries. The statement said that the security forces have launched a search operation in the area to track down the attackers.
The policeman was killed on a day when security forces busted a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) module in Budgam district and arrested five persons, Zahoor Wani, Younis Mir, Aslam Sheikh, Parvaiz Sheikh, and Rehman Lone. Police said Wani also led security forces to an underground hideout. “As per the police records, they were involved in providing logistic support and shelter to the active terrorists of LeT operating in the area,” a police spokesman said.
The police on Friday said it arrested three overground LeT workers from Baramulla town.
Two operations separately launched in Pulwama district since Friday night have also led to the recovery of arms and ammunition. “This recovery emerged as a big success in thwarting nefarious design of terrorists against security forces and averted a major terrorist-related incident planned in Pulwama,” the spokesman said. It added the recovery is another major blow to Hizbul Mujahideen since the killing of its top commander Riaz Naikoo this month.
