A Border Security Force (BSF) officer was injured on Tuesday night when Indian posts along the international border in RS Pura and Arnia sub sectors of Jammu came under heavy Pakistani fire.
Assistant sub inspector, AK Upadhyaya, was shifted to a hospital after being hit in the crossfire.
BSF Jammu frontier deputy inspector general, Dharmender Pareekh, said that exchange of fire mainly took place in RS Pura sector, and went on till about 11:30 pm on Tuesday night. There was intermittent firing in Arnia, he added.
Jammu deputy commissioner Simrandeep Singh said that shelling opened up in Sai Kalan and Arnia at around 1: 30 am on Wednesday.
“People were inside their houses, so no human casualties were reported but cattle numbers (deaths and injuries) are expected as the day progresses,” he said.
Singh said that shelling from the Pakistan side was still ongoing in some areas of RS Pura sector.
Sai Kalan, Burejaal, Treva and Arnia were heavily shelled and fired upon by Pakistan Rangers.
A local said that heavy machine guns and mortars were fired through Tuesday night in Sai, Jeora, Nikowal and Nawanpind side.

Ten people were injured on Tuesday in Pakistani shelling in RS Pura, the epicentre of the recent skirmishes, seven of whom were of women of the same family.
The injured were identified as Shakshi (12), Manju Choudhary (15), Veena (26), Soma Devi (40), Kamlesh Kumari (28), Sanjana (10) and Ratno Devi (60) of Suchetgarh.
Ramesh Kumar of Suchetgarh village, Baljeet Kour (45) of Chanduchak and Ram Lal (70) of Floora village were also injured on Tuesday evening.
