A 19-year-old man accused of murdering a 17-year-old girl in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district was injured after police opened fire on him on Saturday after he attacked them in a bid to escape detention, officers said.
The accused, identified as Venkatesh, was detained on Friday evening for slitting the girl’s throat in Khajipet village, said Kadapa superintendent of police S Nachiketh Vishwanath, adding that he attacked two constable while a contingent was trying to take him to Mydukur police station for interrogation.
“The police initially fired three rounds into the air to warn the accused. However, when he continued to resist and allegedly turned aggressive, officers opened fire at his legs to restrain him. He sustained bullet injuries and was shifted to Kadapa RIMS hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment,” the SP said.
Vishwanath said the accused, who belonged to Anjaneya Kottala village of Khajipet block, was stalking the girl, who just completed Class 12, for the last few months.
