Residents of Garhishyam said the Class 11 student was returning from college on Wednesday evening with her cousin and others when she was stopped by Amarpal on the outskirts of the village. He then allegedly dragged her near the village graveyard and hacked her with a sharp-edged farming instrument before escaping.

According to the locals, Amarpal wanted to marry the girl but she rejected his proposal and that he often used to harass her.

Shamli’s superintendent of police (SP) of Ajay Pal Sharma said that the two were in love but their families did not approve their relationship.

“Since the families were not ready for their wedding, the two decided to end their lives,” Sharma said.

Sharma added that Amarpal first killed the girl and then tried to commit suicide on a railway track, where he was spotted and arrested by the police.

The family members of the girl could not be reached for their comment.
