Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti should release the thousands of people arrested during the summer unrest this year in the Valley as it did not require the Centre’s approval, opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said on Monday.
Taking to Twitter to make the demand, the former chief minister further took a dig at Mehbooba, saying she had “surrendered all authority of her office”.
Abdullah’s comments came after Mehbooba, during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi earlier in the day, pressed for initiation of confidence-building measures to reach out to the people of the state.

The Valley has been in a state of unrest since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Burhan Wani, by security forces early in July. Kashmir witnessed its longest continuous curfew amid civilian protests, clashes with security forces and separatist-called shutdowns.
During the Parliament’s monsoon session in August, the Opposition cornered the Centre over the issue, especially over the use of pellet guns for crowd control. Scores were injured by the pellets -- they were either maimed and/or partially blinded, and in five cases had died from their injuries.
