Mizoram, which shares boundaries with Bangladesh and Myanmar, can benefit from Centre’s Act East policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at Aizwal on Saturday.
Addressing a public meeting in the Mizoram capital during his first visit to the state since assuming office, Modi reiterated his government’s commitment for overall development of the state and the entire northeast region.
“As a gateway to South East Asia, Mizoram stands to gain immensely from union government’s Act East policy. It can emerge as a key transit point for trade with Myanmar and Bangladesh,” he said.
The PM also dedicated the 60MW Tuirial hydro power project to the nation.
Besides power generation, the project, which makes Mizoram the third power surplus state in the region after Tripura and Sikkim, will also boost water navigation, pisciculture, tourism and water supply.
Mizoram will go to polls early next year and Modi’s visit is expected to boost Bharatiya’s Janata Party’s aim of coming to power in the state for the first time, by dislodging the ruling Congress government.
“The high literacy rate, scenic beauty and availability of large English speaking population of Mizoram makes as perfect blend to develop the state as a model tourist destination,” the PM said while informing about sanctioning of two tourism projects worth Rs 194 crores for the state.
Setting up of a venture capital fund worth Rs 100 crore for start-ups in the region, 100% central funding for development project in NE and rail connectivity to all state capitals in the region were other issues covered by Modi in his 38-minute speech.
