Mumbai Rain highlights: IMD issues yellow alert for Friday

The highway police on Thursday blocked the movement of vehicles on the Mumbai-bound arm of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway for two hours to remove boulders and mud on the carriageway, officials said.

Due to incessant rains in the region, a landslide occurred on July 23 near the Adoshi tunnel on the busy road, said an official.

The city would likely to see 'extremely heavy' rains in a few locations till tomorrow, although it was initially predicted that the intensity of rains will start tapering off during the day. Officials said that continuous rains should be expected over the next two days, and that a dry spell is not likely before late in the first week of August.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has extended Wednesday's 'red alert' for rains in Mumbai till 8:30am Friday, in light of continuous widespread showers from across the city.

The local train services on the Western Railway were affected in the peak hours on Thursday morning. There was a technical failure between Bhayandar and Naigaon stations that delayed train services by 5-7 minutes.

According to WR officials, thete was a track failure between the two stations that happened at 6.45am. "The track failure was on the slow line. It was put right in between, but it experienced trouble again. It was finally rectified by 7.56am," said a WR official.

As heavy rainfall continues to create havoc in the city, multiple videos are emerging showing city's road conditions. Aam Aadmi Party's state joint secretary, Aditya Paul shared the video of Veera Desai Road, Mumbai on Wednesday. In the video, half of the road can be seen flooded with water.

The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police will be closing Mumbai-Pune Expressway - second time within a week - for vehicular traffic for two hours between 12 to 2 pm on Thursday to clear the debris off the highway, officials said.

According to the Highway police, all the Mumbai- bound lanes of the high speed corridor will be closed for traffic for two hours around noon and traffic has been diverted. The recent heavy downpour in Mumbai, Pune and Konkan region had led to landslides and rockfalls in the hilly areas including Mumbai-Pune expressway.

As the city continues to receive severe rainfall, the spokesperson of theBrihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking told ANI that there was no bus route diversion anywhere in the city on Thursday.

On Wednesday, low-lying areas like the Andheri subway had to be temporarily closed for traffic due to waterlogging. The IMD has continued its orange alert for Thane, Raigad, and Palghar for Thursday, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places.

Amid heavy rainfall, the Colaba observatory recorded "extremely heavy" rainfall at 223.2 mm. The Santacruz observatory (representative of suburbs) recorded 145.1 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, according to the IMD Mumbai.

Despite extreme rainfall, local trains are running on time in Mumbai. The Western Railway division informed that the trains are running normally in Mumbai Suburban route and Harbour line.

A viral video of leaking roof of the bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has received criticism on the internet. The viral video has also forced the government to take swift action in the matter. In the video, people can see the outer covering of its rooftop getting detached from one side and fluttering in the air, prompting the authorities to initiate a probe into it.

Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and suburbs in the last 24 hours with some areas receiving extremely heavy showers, officials said on Thursday.

The city witnessed incessant rainfall since Thursday morning, but there was no report of any major waterlogging in low-lying areas, they said.

The India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Mumbai centre has predicted "heavy to very heavy rain" in the city on Thursday.

As Mumbai continues to receive heavy rainfall, two lakes in the city— Vehar and Tansa — overflowed early Wednesday after reaching their full capacity. As of now, three out of the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai have overflowed, but the BMC said that 10 per cent water cut imposed from July 1 will continue “unless the overall stock in all the seven lakes touches the 70% mark”.

The Mumbai-bound lane of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will be closed for two hours between 12 noon and 2 pm today, according to the Maharashtra highway traffic police. The closure has been ordered for the clearing of the debris after the landslide that took place on the Expressway late Sunday. Officials also said vehicles going towards Mumbai from Pune can use the old Pune-Mumbai highway.
