A lookout notice issued by Punjab police helped immigration officials at Indo-Nepal border town Raxaul, in Bihar’s East Champaran district, 204km from Patna, to arrest a national from New Zealand on Tuesday.
A deputy superintendent of police (DSP)–rank officer at the immigration office, Anil Kumar Singh, said Amrit Kaur was trying to enter India from Nepal by road when she was arrested.
Kaur, who worked in New Zealand after acquiring citizenship of the island nation, was wanted in a dowry case lodged in Punjab in 2014, the officer said. Daughter of Sukhbir Singh, Kaur originally hailed from Dugri village of Punjab’s Ludhiana district, he added.
The officer said during scrutiny of passport and other travel documents, immigration officials detected that her name was mentioned in the lookout notice. She was immediately detained and handed over to the local police, he said.
Station house officer (SHO) of the Raxaul police station, Ugranath Jha, said the wife of Kaur’s brother had made her an accused in a dowry case. Kaur, who had been working in New Zealand since 2007, had come to Dugri village when the case was lodged, he said.
Soon after she was made an accused, Kaur escaped to New Zealand and never visited India after the lookout notice issued against her, Jha said, adding that she had been sent to Punjab after her interrogation.
