Part of Kashmir’s longest flyover thrown open to public

Of the 2.5-km-long flyover from Jahangir Chowk to Rambagh, Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti inaugurated the first phase of 1.56 km between Amarsingh College road and Barzulla in Srinagar.

A part of Kashmir’s longest flyover in Srinagar was thrown open to public on Friday by chief minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Of the 2.5-km-long flyover from Jahangir Chowk to Rambagh, Mufti inaugurated the first phase of 1.56 km between Amarsingh College road and Barzulla in Srinagar.

Observing that the flyover will bring relief to commuters, especially while going to the airport, public works minister, Naeem Akhtar said that the project would be completed by the end of this year.

The project was started in 2014 after its foundation was laid by then-chief minister Omar Abdullah. However, the work on the flyover was delayed due to floods in 2014 and political unrest triggered by the death of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani in 2016.

The flyover is being built by Jammu and Kashmir Economic Reconstruction Agency (JKERA) at a cost of over ₹350 crore.

“This is the biggest intervention so far in road sector in Srinagar (by Asian Development Bank),”Akhtar said.

Immediately after the flyover was thrown open, traffic department issued an advisory informing that it was only for one way traffic movement.

He said commuters travelling to Budgam, Hyderpora, Rawalpora, Baghat Barzulla and the airport can use the flyover. However, commuters travelling to Chanapora and Natipora should take the Rambagh Bridge beneath the flyover.
