Pakistan’s former president Pervez Musharraf died at a Dubai hospital at the age of 79 on Sunday. He passed away after a period of prolonged illness and was being treated at an American Hospital in Dubai.
Remembered as the mastermind of the 1999 Kargil War, Musharraf’s death inevitably invokes another chapter of his Indian connection - his ancestral house in Old Delhi's Daryaganj where he was born in the year 1943. His house - 'Neharwali Haveli' is located at Kucha Saadullah Khan, behind Golcha cinema in Daryaganj. There, he spent the initial four years of his childhood before moving to Pakistan in the event of partition.

Musharraf, who was living in Dubai in self-imposed exile, had appointed himself as the president of Pakistan in 2001 after ousting elected prime minister Nawaz Sharif and went onto rule the Islamic republic till 2008. During his first visit to India as the Pakistan president, he visited his ancestral property in Daryaganj and also talked to his ‘friends’ and ‘neighbours’ while he was there.

{{/usCountry}}The ‘Neharwali Haveli’ was bought by Musharraf's grandfather Qazi Mohtashimuddin following his retirement as the commissioner of Punjab. The property, now mostly in ruins, was deserted during the partition after his family moved to Pakistan.
In 2005, Musharraf’s mother Zarin (who passed away in 2021) also paid a visit to their ancestral house along with her son Javed and Musharraf's son Bilal. This was 23 years after 1982 when she visited the property and met with Aruna Asaf Ali.
