Bengaluru police have detained 116 foreign nationals suspected of staying in the city without valid documents and are verifying their identities and immigration records before deciding on further action, officials said on Tuesday.
The operation, which began on August 8, is being conducted across the Bengaluru City Police limits and does not target any particular nationality, joint commissioner of police Ramesh Banoth said.
“Till Tuesday evening, we have detained 116 illegal immigrants so far,” Banoth said.
The detainees are being held at five locations under the Whitefield and Electronic City police divisions while officers examine their passports, visas and other documents establishing their right to remain in India.
Police have also approached the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which handles matters concerning foreign nationals in the country.
“We have written to the FRRO and the process of deporting them is under way,” Banoth said.
Police teams are continuing searches in different parts of Bengaluru and checking the documentation of foreign nationals encountered during the drive. Officials said the legal status of each person would be determined through document and identity verification rather than nationality.
“Some more searches are still underway, and we are continuing to verify the documents. We will have more clarity once that process is completed,” Banoth said.

{{/usCountry}}Those found without valid documentation are being detained for further verification and necessary legal action. The police said the operation would continue in the coming days and that additional people could be detained if they are found to be residing in the city without the required documents.
Further action will follow completion of the verification process and directions from the FRRO.
