When Shanti Bhadu sold a pile of old newspapers and books to a pair of scrap dealers, little did she know she was giving away a small fortune — tucked between the pages was Rs 1 lakh in cash.
But what surprised the housewife from Rajasthan’s Hanumangarh district and her husband Kishore Bhadu even more was that the money came back to them the very next day. Surendra and Shankar Verma, brothers who go door to door buying scrap for Rs 5 a kilogram, collected Shanti’s stash from her house on Tuesday. Late that night, while going through their day’s collection, they found the cash — a wad of Rs 100 and Rs 500 notes.
“We couldn’t sleep the whole night,” said Shankar. “We collect scrap from so many houses, how could we figure out which one the cash had come from?”
They sifted through the books and newspapers for a clue — and found one. One of the books had a name, Shalu Poonia, written on it. The next morning, the brothers — in their 30s — went back to all the villages they had visited on Tuesday. They soon found out that a Shalu Poonia lived in 15 SGR village. Taking the help of some village elders, they went back to the house of the Bhadus — Shalu is their granddaughter — and returned the money.
The couple didn’t know even then that the cash was gone. “I had borrowed Rs 1 lakh to repay a debt and put it in a box with old books for safety. How could I have known my wife would sell them?” said Kishore. Praising the brothers for their honesty, he said, “I cannot thank them enough. They are angels for me.”
