Haryana folk singer Harshita Dahiya was shot dead by her brother-in-law, her sister alleged on Wednesday, saying she was murdered for having been a witness to their mother’s killing.

“She was killed by my husband because she was a witness in our mother’s murder case,” said Lata, Harshita’s sister.

The singer was gunned down on Tuesday while returning from a performance in Haryana’s Panipat and police said on Wednesday that “we will slowly get to the bottom of this”.

Harshita had also accused her brother-in-law of rape, and the man was jailed on the complaint.

She recently posted a video hinting at other suspects who she said were threatening her.

“There are some people from the industry, our own performers from Haryana, threatening me on the phone to compromise and delete the video or else I will have to face the consequences,” Dahiya said in the video uploaded on YouTube, referring to a Facebook video that she live-streamed on October 12 in which she accused people of threatening to “outrage her modesty”.

“I will not delete the live video on Facebook... I am not afraid of dying,” the singer said.
