TVK Vijay Rally Stampede Highlights: A massive campaign rally by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ended in tragedy on Saturday evening, September 27, when a sudden crowd surge left at least 39 people dead and around 40 injured in Karur district. As per the Tamil Nadu health secretary P Senthil Kumar, the deceased include 17 women, 13 men, and nine children. Director of medical education Suganthy Rajakumari said the postmortem and handover of the bodies would be completed before Sunday noon, adding that the government had arranged for accommodation, food, and other necessities for the victims' families.
...Read MoreAs per police sources, the rally took a turn for the worse after the crowd surged towards the barricade to catch a glimpse of Vijay during his speech. Police sources also told HT that officials had expected around 30,000 people for the TVK rally. However, local reports stated that the rally saw at least 60,000 people in attendance.
Several leaders such as PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, MK Stalin, Arvind Kejriwal and more have expressed their concern regarding the situation in Karur as well as offered condolences to the families of the victims. Leaders across the political divide, including Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin, deputy CM and DMK leader Udayanidhi Stalin, AIADMK's Edappadi Palaniswami, and BJP leaders Nainar Nagenthran and Tamilisai Soundarajan reached Karur to meet the victims' families and extend their support.
Stampede at TVK rally in Karur | Key Updates
- The initial death toll of 10 has now increased to 39, with around 40 injured. The death toll, as per officials, is expected to rise.
- Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalinannounced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the victims, and an aid of ₹1 lakh each to those undergoing medical treatment.
- Tamil Nadu DGP G Venkataraman said that TVK on its X handle had said Vijay would arrive at the venue by12, following which people started coming in at 11 am. “He came at 7.40 PM. The people lacked sufficient food water under the hot sun,” the DGP said.
- The DGP further said that the turnout was higher than expected. He said that while the organisers had expected an attendance of 10,000 persons based on the crowd in earlier TVK rallies, around 27,000 had turned up.
