Two soldiers were killed in a gunbattle with militants at Handwara in North Kashmir’s Nowgam sector on Saturday night. Two militants also died in the operation, which is still in progress.

Confirming the incident, an Army spokesperson said the incident occurred when a group of militants tried to infiltrate into Kashmir’s Kupwara district through the LoC. The soldiers succumbed to their injuries in a hospital they were admitted to.
A group of militants had managed to give security forces the slip in Badi Behak area earlier this morning.
In another incident, three people – including a policeman – allegedly decamped with four rifles belonging to security personnel posted at a Food Corporation of India godown in central Kashmir’s Budgam district. Sources said two friends of the policeman, identified as Syed Naveed Mushtaq, came to the godown and invited the security personnel to join them in offering namaz. While they were praying, the trio fled with their firearms.
