Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Allahabad high court on Sunday and assured the HCBA lawyers that he would not “disappoint” them on their demand against creation of a new bench of the court in western UP.
Members of the High Court Bar Association were angry over media reports that Bharatiya Janata Party national president Amit Shah had supported a separate bench of the judicial body for western UP.
The Prime Minister also assured HCBA office-bearers that their demands including filling up of all vacant posts of judges, land for parking of vehicles and seating of lawyers and a multi-speciality hospital for lawyers would also be considered.
HCBA president RK Ojha said that the Prime Minister gave them the assurance after he was apprised of the strong opposition by lawyers to the setting up of the bench.
The Prime Minister garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the marble hall of the high court. Thereafter, he met the judges. He also visited the museum of the high court and met the office-bearers of HCBA.
Before the PM’s visit, state BJP president Keshav Prasad Maurya reached the high court and met the association officials. He denied that BJP president Amit Shah gave any statement in support of creation of a new bench in western UP and added that no proposal was pending in this regard.
