People in the northwestern part of India are experiencing a brief respite from the upward march of the temperatures thanks to a western disturbance, even though the monsoon is still on its way.
“They were forecast to peak on May 29 and are likely to weaken thereafter,” M Mohapatra, the director general at India Meteorological Department’s Regional Weather Centre in Delhi, said.
Western disturbance refers to a system of low pressure that moves from west to east, bringing moisture from Eurasian water bodies, and is responsible for winter rain in northwestern India and snowfall in the Himalayan tracts. It usually brings rain during the winters but also during the pre-monsoon period.
Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are in the midst heavy rainfall spell that will continue until Wednesday. Uttar Pradesh that received rain on Sunday and Monday will see the stint last till Tuesday.
However, the reprieve will end on Monday for Punjab and Haryana. Delhi has also witnessed thunderstorms and a few spells of rain which will die out by Monday night.
As north-west India bids adieu to the pre-monsoon showers, the eastern part of the country is bracing for heavy rainfalls that will be brought by a cyclonic storm Mora, which is brewing in the Bay of Bengal and is likely to cross Bangladesh’s coast on Tuesday.
