Woman, three children among 17 killed in road accident in UP’s Shahjahanpur

While 15 people, most of them vegetable vendors on their way to Maigalganj, were killed on the spot, two died after reaching the hospital.

Three women and two children were among the 17 people killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur on Tuesday.

In the accident that took place at the Jhumka crossing on NH-24 in Shahjahanpur, about 160 km from the state capital Lucknow, a speeding truck rammed into a tempo and then hit a mini-truck, which fell into a ditch. Five people who were critically injured have been admitted to the hospital, police said.

While 15 people, most of them vegetable vendors on their way to Maigalganj, were killed on the spot, two died after reaching the hospital.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath, while expressing his condolences to the bereaved families, asked Shahjahanpur district magistrate Indra Vikram Singh to extend all possible medical assistance to the injured.

The identities of those killed were being established and a search was on to locate the absconding truck driver, Shahjahanpur SP S Channappa said.
