In a rare incident of its kind, an ovarian cyst measuring 30 cm x 13 cm and weighing 10.5 kg was successfully removed from a 47-year-old woman’s body at the Railway Hospital in Rajkot on Friday. The operation, performed by the general surgeon Dr Anup Lal Sinha, lasted 90 minutes and the patient was feeling quite “hale and hearty”.
“This was a unique case in that despite carrying such a heavy tumour inside her for a pretty long time, the patient was not feeling any pain. She herself told me that she was feeling perfectly all right,” Sinha said.
In fact, when she was brought to this hospital on March 6, the doctors believed that it was a case of pregnancy. It was only when she denied it that they became a bit curious and concerned. “She said she decided to be medically examined simply because she was feeling awkward with her bulging belly,” Sinha told Hindustan Times.
“Normally, the patient begins to feel acute pain when the size of the ovarian cyst begins to increase rapidly and the weight starts crossing the usual limit of about 6 kg or so. This was a truly remarkable, even challenging, case because not only had her tumour surpassed the normal size and weight but she was also feeling no pain. Obviously she could not have consulted the doctors at a better time. Considering the enormous size and the weight of the tumour, she could have faced a number of complications if she had delayed further in getting it removed. It could have ruptured any time and would have led to many serious problems,” he said.
The patient, Jivuben Mulariya, had no other ailments, Sinha said. “My wife had been carrying a bulging belly for the last couple of years. It had been increasing quite noticeably. She never complained of any pain or problem despite being in such a strange physical condition. Of course, she would often feel embarrassed when people asked her if she was pregnant,” her husband, Bhagwanji Mulariya, a fitter in the Western Railway, Jamnagar, said.
