11 die as bus plunges into river near Lucknow

The area was engulfed in dense fog and visibility was very poor when the accident took place.

At least 11 persons died in Uttar Pradesh when a bus careened into a river due to thick fog early Friday morning, the police said.

The accident took place in Rampur, 300 kilometres northwest of Lucknow.

"The area was engulfed with dense fog and visibility was poor when the accident took place," Surendra Srivastava, a police official said.

One passenger survived by swimming to safety, he added.

It was not immediately known if there were other survivors or how many people were on the bus, which was being pulled from the river by rescue crews.
