Fourteen people were killed and several others were injured on Monday when two buses collided head-on near Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, officials said.

Expressing her condolence to the grieving relatives, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has ordered compensation of Rs100,000 to each victim's family.

According to a statement issued by the government on Monday, a Tamil Nadu state transport bus collided head-on with a private bus that was travelling from Puducherry to Thiruvanthapuram.
Seven seriously injured were admitted to the government hospital in Tiruchirapalli, some 320 km from Chennai.
