A six-year-old boy died and his mother was seriously injured after being thrown off a moving Jodhpur-bound train early on Monday morning allegedly by a man who tried to rob her.

Acting on the the woman's complaint, the police are looking into an old family rivalry also being the reason for the attack.

The police said 35-year-old Geeta, a Dalit and resident of Aathnawas village in Jalore district, was returning home from Deesa town in Gujarat. Instead of getting down at Bhinmal, the closest station to her home, she reached Jodhpur.

She took the next train, Jodhpur-Bhildi, home. When the train reached Samdari station, the accused, identified as Raju Bawari, tried to rob her and when she resisted pushed her and the kid from the compartment.

The child, Chintu, died on the tracks, while Geeta was admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Government railway police in-charge Banwarilal said they had recorded Geeta's statement. She said Bawari assaulted her because of an old rivalry between her and his family.
