Sixty trucks packed with onions entered India on Wednesday from Pakistan as traders stepped up imports amid soaring prices of onions in the country.
After the arrival of the first lot of 38 trucks on Tuesday, 60 trucks crossed the India-Pakistan land border to reach the town of Amritsar, officials said.
"Another 60-70 trucks will arrive tomorrow (Thursday)," one official said.
"All major traders have placed orders in Pakistani mandis. They will be able to send onions to India for at least next 10 days," importer Rajdeep Uppal told IANS.
He added that the situation in India would stabilize by then. He said that onion prices had started falling.
"We are expecting them to come down to Rs 300 a quintal in the wholesale market in five to six days. There has been pressure on the hoarders and we expect things will be in place soon," said Uppal, who is also the vice-president of the Amritsar Exports and Imports Chamber.
Importers here are looking to buy over 1,000 tonnes of onions from Pakistan.
Most of the onions coming to India is from the Sindh province. However, traders say the quality of the Pakistani onion is not as good as the onion produced in India.
