The polythene bags, which were being smuggled into the state from Punjab, were seized from a truck loaded with bags of potatoes, said Mustaq Ahmed, deputy commissioner of excise and taxation at Lakhanpur.

The truck, bearing fake registration plates, and the illegal consignment have been handed over to the commercial tax department, Ahmed said.

The use, sale and import of polythene bags is banned in the state under directions from the Jammu and Kashmir high court.
