According to the actor, his fans reacted very angrily to his decision to act in Dear Friend Hitler. He was hounded by a lot of people saying, "How can you play Hitler, who was responsible for the massacre of millions of people?"

Kher was moved by these comments and decided not to feature in the movie. "Initially I thought that since I am an actor, I should be up for any role. But after seeing that so many people were reacting against it, I realised that I should not hurt people. Kyun kisiko bhi dukh pahunchaun? Human emotions are bigger than cinema," he told Mumbai Mirror.

Besides furious reactions of fans, Kher's decision was also influenced by director's statement, which said that Hitler was responsible for India's independence.
