Saturday witnessed the coronation of a new king in Indian golf. Ashok Kumar's third straight win of the 2004-05 Amby Valley PGAI Tour season has propelled him into a comfortable lead on the Order of Merit. Ashok is finally out of the shadow, a rather lengthy one, cast by Mukesh Kumar.
Some might argue that the Delhi Golf Club professional achieved this last season when he brought to an end Mukesh's three-year reign atop the Order of Merit, but I tend to disagree. One swallow, they say, doesn't make a summer. Today, Ashok has truly earned his kingdom.
The final round battle at the HT Pro Golf, over and above providing pure entertainment, revealed an important aspect of Indian golf.
Two of the players plugging it out for supremacy hailed from strikingly different backgrounds. On the one hand you had a youngster fresh from a college degree in the US, and on the other a boy who used to sell channas for a living, not knowing where his next meal would come from.
